K+S, a leading European fertilizer manufacturer and salt supplier, is expanding its collaboration with DB Cargo through a new decade-long contract, continuing a strong and long-term logistics partnership. This enduring agreement covers approximately 70 million tons of transport volume, equivalent to over a million wagon loads. As a key player in the global food supply chain through fertilizer production, K+S also supplies industrial and food-grade salt to clients worldwide.

Dr. Burkhard Lohr, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of K+S AG, emphasized the need for environmentally friendly transport and highly praised DB Cargo as a reliable partner.

The partnership aims to ensure sustainable high availability of freight wagons and the integration of innovative wagons for bulk cargo into existing transport operations.

Dr. Sigrid Nikutta, Member of the Management Board for Freight Transport at Deutsche Bahn AG and Chair of the Management Board and CEO of DB Cargo AG, highlighted the importance of K+S’s potash and mineral raw materials in various aspects of modern life. DB Cargo’s rail freight services contribute to providing reliable and environmentally friendly logistics for K+S, saving over 200,000 heavy truck journeys annually.

The collaboration with DB Cargo, rooted in decades of partnership, involves K+S relying on environmentally friendly rail transport, with DB Cargo currently transporting six million tons annually. To further improve this situation, plans include modernizing the DB Cargo wagon fleet with the purchase of up to 650 new Tanoos bulk freight wagons from mid-2025, specifically designed for transporting K+S products.

DB Cargo manages rail logistics for K+S across multiple company sites, facilitating the transport of K+S cargo from Werra, Neuhof, and Zielitz to the Port of Hamburg. From there, the products are shipped to various international markets, underscoring the crucial role of rail transport in K+S’s global supply chain.
