To speed up the construction of Rail Baltica in Lithuania, the project management model has been changed, and LTG Infra has now been given the authority to conclude contracts. One of the largest agreements was the design of the 78-kilometer section from Kaunas to Ramygala, which was previously supervised by RB Rail AS, a joint venture of the three Baltic countries. Now LTG Infra directly interacts with the Spanish company IDOM Consulting, Engineering, Architecture, S.A.U., which is responsible for the design of this section.
Previously, the project management was centralized, but differences in national strategies for the implementation of Rail Baltica led to a redistribution of responsibilities. According to LTG Group CEO Egidijus Lazauskas, autonomous contract management accelerates the decision-making process and the implementation of works. LTG Infra CEO Vytis Žalimas noted that after the transfer of the contract, cooperation with IDOM has been successful, which is critical, since the active construction phase of the entire 114-kilometer section from Kaunas to Panevezys will begin in 2024.
The Rail Baltica project is the largest EU-funded railway infrastructure project in the history of the Baltics. It will connect Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia with Central and Western Europe using the European gauge standard. The Lithuanian section will include a bridge across the Neris River, 20 road and 31 railway overpasses, 7 railway bridges, 7 animal crossings and other infrastructure.
