A.P. Moller – Maersk has unveiled the first vessel of the new Berlin Mærsk class of container ships, equipped with a dual-fuel methanol plant. The ceremony took place on June 18 at the Hyundai Heavy Industries shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea. This is the 14th vessel with an environmentally friendly drive type in the Maersk fleet, and five more similar ones will join it in the near future.

Berlin Mærsk is the largest dual-fuel vessel in the company’s history. Its wide deck allows it to carry more containers compared to previous Ane Mærsk-class vessels. The new container ship will first call in Shanghai on July 7, when it will begin operations on the AE3 route connecting East Asia with Northern Europe.

According to Maersk’s head of technical fleet Ole Graa Jacobsen, the launch of the Berlin Mærsk series is a continuation of the company’s sustainable strategy in the areas of decarbonization and innovation. All six vessels in the series are being built at HHI and will be delivered to the Maersk fleet under the Danish flag during 2025.
