Maersk launches groundbreaking methanol-powered vessel on Asia-Europe trade route

Copenhagen, Denmark – A.P. Moller – Maersk (Maersk) is gearing up to introduce the initial vessel of its 18-strong fleet of large methanol-enabled ships, with the maiden voyage set to commence on February 9, 2024, along the AE7 route connecting Asia and Europe. The vessel, constructed by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea, boasts a nominal capacity of 16,000 containers (TEU) and features a dual-fuel engine, allowing operations on methanol, biodiesel, and conventional bunker fuel. Maersk’s commitment to achieving Net-Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 is exemplified by this groundbreaking move, positioning the company as a leader in sustainable shipping.

In alignment with its environmental goals, Maersk has secured ample green methanol to cover the inaugural voyage of the vessel, emphasizing the company’s dedication to sourcing sustainable solutions for its methanol-enabled fleet in the coming years. The vessel, scheduled for deployment in January 2024, will be christened at the shipyard, marking the first of three sister vessels to be introduced in the first half of 2024. With all 24 vessels on order equipped with dual-fuel engines, Maersk ensures that each vessel can operate on green methanol, showcasing a steadfast commitment to green fuel adoption since 2021.

As the vessel joins Maersk’s AE7 service string, connecting Asia and Europe through the Suez Canal, it stands as a testament to the company’s proactive approach in leading the maritime industry towards a sustainable future. The AE7 string encompasses key port calls, including Ningbo, Shanghai, Tanjung Pelepas, Colombo, and Hamburg, reinforcing Maersk’s role in facilitating global trade while prioritizing eco-friendly practices.
