In a groundbreaking move, Maersk, a leading global shipping and logistics company, has designated Shanghai as its new global gateway for Less-than-Container-Load (LCL) shipments. This strategic decision, driven by recently eased local restrictions, positions Shanghai as a central hub for consolidating and transporting LCL shipments from nearby countries to destinations worldwide, marking a significant shift in industry practices. Maersk’s pioneering initiative to utilize Shanghai as its LCL global gateway underscores the company’s commitment to innovation and opens up new possibilities for Shanghai to strengthen its role as a pivotal player in global trade.

Historically, LCL cargos from China predominantly flowed through traditional gateways like Hong Kong, Singapore, or Tanjung Pelepas. Maersk’s move to leverage Shanghai for LCL shipments not only breaks away from the norm but also involves an extensive expansion of its LCL global consolidation network. With over 50 new trade lanes introduced, directly connecting to and from Shanghai, the move results in the facilitation of more than 200 direct LCL routes through the Shanghai port. As China remains the largest origin for Maersk’s LCL business, the establishment of Shanghai as a global gateway positions Maersk to offer enhanced options for customers and tap into the growing demand in the Chinese LCL sector, particularly with the continuous expansion of China’s exports and cross-border e-commerce business.
