A consortium of prominent companies dedicated to advancing nuclear energy solutions for maritime applications has unveiled the establishment of the Nuclear Energy Maritime Organization (NEMO).

NEMO’s primary objective is to collaborate with nuclear and maritime regulators in crafting robust standards and regulations governing the deployment, operation, and decommissioning of floating nuclear power platforms. With a focus on promoting the highest levels of safety, security, and environmental responsibility, NEMO will serve as a hub for expertise exchange, fostering cooperation among its members and stakeholders.

Emphasizing the potential of advanced nuclear technologies to mitigate environmental impact, uphold social accountability, and enhance economic competitiveness, NEMO seeks to facilitate networking opportunities for its members while facilitating constructive dialogue between regulators. Headquartered in London, NEMO is slated to commence operations in the second quarter of 2024, boasting an impressive lineup of founding members including HD KSOE, Lloyd’s Register, BWXT Advanced Technologies LLC, TerraPower, LLC, and others.

Membership eligibility is extended to companies with a genuine interest in the floating nuclear power sector, provided they align with NEMO’s sustainability, innovation, and excellence standards. The organization envisions a robust agenda of events, workshops, webinars, and publications aimed at both its members and the wider public, with plans for collaborative endeavors with industry associations, government bodies, academic institutions, and civil society organizations to advance the floating nuclear power agenda.
