The vessel “Zhen Hua 27” arrived in the Port of Hamburg, delivering new container cranes for the Burchardkai Terminal (CTB). Until November 23, the vessel remained at the Athabaskakai berth for preparation for unloading, after which the cranes were installed at berths 1 and 2. Completion of installation is scheduled for the end of November, and commissioning is scheduled for early 2025.
“The new cranes will provide maximum flexibility for handling the largest container ships, making the terminal more efficient, environmentally friendly and prepared for future challenges,” said CTB Managing Director Ingo Witte.
The 80-meter-high cranes can handle vessels with a capacity of up to 24,000 TEU and replace older models. Three more similar cranes are planned for installation at the terminal by 2026.
The modernisation of CTB, Germany’s largest container terminal, is ongoing and includes the automation of transport systems, the expansion of the block storage facility and the construction of a new 5,000 m² repair hall. All new equipment runs on electricity from renewable sources, reflecting the HHLA Group’s ambition to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040.
