The Austrian Federal Ministry of Innovation, Mobility, and Infrastructure has commissioned the state-owned railway group ÖBB to develop a reform concept aimed at restructuring the company. The reorganization process includes expanding the operator’s business activities, and the changes are scheduled to begin in early 2027.

ÖBB CEO Andreas Matte announced that the company will prepare a strategy document to serve as the basis for structural changes. According to the ministry, the reform is intended to improve the group’s efficiency and ensure greater flexibility in the face of growing demand for public transport, increased competition, and technological changes, including the digitalization of the industry.

Matte noted that changes to the legislation governing federal railways may be necessary to more quickly respond to market trends. The key goal of the reform is to strengthen the integrated “one ÖBB” model and increase the company’s resilience to crises. Details of the proposed structural changes have not yet been disclosed.
