October boost: surge in rail freight transport across Poland

In October 2023, the rail freight industry demonstrated a notable increase in transport performance, surpassing the figures from the previous year. The total transport performance exceeded 5.5 billion tonne-km, marking a 0.6% rise compared to 2022. Although the weight of goods carried slightly decreased to 21 million tonnes, a 1.2% decline, it still represented the second-highest monthly result of the year.

Despite a year-on-year decrease in operational performance by 2.3%, totaling over 7.4 million train-km, the average transport distance per tonne of goods extended to 263 km, a 4.6 km increase from 2022. On a month-on-month basis, October 2023 witnessed a significant rise in the weight of goods carried, reaching 1.3 million tonnes, a 6.5% increase from September. The transport performance and operational performance also experienced positive growth, with a 5.4% increase in tonne-km and a 5.1% increase in train-km, respectively. Notably, the average transport distance per tonne of goods in October was 3 km shorter than in September.

Examining the broader picture from January to October 2023, rail operators transported over 193.9 million tonnes of goods, registering a 7.1% decrease from the same period in 2022. The transport performance and operational performance reached 51.8 billion tonne-km and 70.9 million train-km, respectively, showcasing a marginal decline of 0.6% and 2.5% compared to the previous year.
