In a groundbreaking initiative, the Port of Rotterdam Authority is launching a pilot project this month in the Seinehaven to test and refine installation methods for underwater anchors. This pilot is a crucial component of the collaborative innovation partnership focused on advancing underwater anchor development within the port.

The utilization of underwater anchors presents an effective solution for reinforcing and deepening quay walls, addressing the evolving needs of ports, including accommodating deeper-draught ships and handling surcharge loads. The Seinehaven’s public docks have been designated as the testing ground for partners in the development process, including High 5 Solutions, Hakkers B.V., and Smet Group Nederland BV, to assess their implementation method for installing these innovative anchors.

Aligning with the Port Authority’s commitment to sustainable port development, the adoption of underwater anchors contributes to avoiding new construction and reducing material usage in projects. Furthermore, the installation method minimally impacts clients’ operational processes. The Port Authority envisions the pilot as a catalyst for technology development, fostering the widespread deployment of underwater anchors in the Port of Rotterdam by the end of 2023. This versatile solution, once perfected, could extend beyond Rotterdam and find applications in quay walls across various ports.
