The year 2024 has become a time of changes and ambitious projects for the ports of Szczecin and Świnoujście. Despite the decrease in cargo turnover by 8.5% (32,305.8 million tons), the results of the year are assessed positively due to the stabilization of indicators in the second half of the year.
The President of ZMPSiŚ S.A. Jarosław Siergiej noted: “We look at this result with optimism, because in the second half of last year we managed to overcome the downward trend that has been ongoing since the end of 2022.”
The main difficulties were associated with the cessation of coal imports as part of sanctions against Russia and the reduction in the transit of Ukrainian goods through Polish ports. However, thanks to new investments and projects, it was possible to reverse the negative trends.
The development of offshore wind energy has become one of the key areas of the year. An agreement was signed with the Spanish company Windar on the construction of a wind power plant on Grabowski Island. The first stage of construction of the offshore energy handling infrastructure has been completed in Świnoujście, including three new berths. In addition, the ports have joined the European Offshore Wind Port Alliance to actively contribute to achieving the EU’s environmental goals.
The container terminal in Świnoujście remains a strategic project. In 2024, preparatory work was carried out, including a survey of the seabed and coast. An environmental report is expected in January 2025, after which the active construction phase will begin. This will be an important step in enhancing the region’s role in the Baltic.
The deep-water port in Szczecin is also preparing to handle the largest vessels, thanks to the modernization of the infrastructure to a depth of 12.5 m. Renovated berths are already in operation, such as the Dabrowecki berth, equipped for the safe handling of sulphuric acid, as well as the Norwegian berth, where a modern terminal and cement plant are planned.
In 2024, the expansion of the LNG terminal in Świnoujście was completed, allowing not only the reception but also the export of liquefied gas. In addition, the ferry terminal infrastructure was modernized to handle intermodal transport and new routes were opened, including flights to Sweden.
The receipt of grants and subsidies was an important achievement of the year. Among them is the financing of a multimodal rail hub and a project to decarbonize the maritime sector. These initiatives ensure sustainable port development, environmental improvement and safety.
