Record-breaking freight performance: Kazakhstan’s Rail Network achieved remarkable growth in 2023

In 2023, the freight volume on the Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ) networks reached 257.3 million tons, exceeding the previous year’s figure by 5 million tons. Exports increased by 9%, reaching 85.8 million tons. It is noteworthy that the domestic loading of coal remained stable at the 2022 level, totaling 74 million tons, while coal exports reached 31.7 million tons.

There is also a notable 12.2% growth in grain transportation, reaching 11.2 million tons, of which 9 million tons were destined for export, representing a 12.7% increase. The transportation of milling products remained consistently high, exceeding 3 million tons, corresponding to the level of the previous year.

In terms of freight categories, the railway successfully handled various cargoes in 2023. For instance, the loading of oil products amounted to 18.8 million tons, a 2% increase, with exports growing by 6%. Additionally, there was an increase in the loading of iron and manganese ore (+10%), chemical fertilizers (+2.3%), colored ore and sulfuric raw materials (+2%), and construction goods (+8.2%).

It is important to highlight that in 2023, 3.2 million tons of gravel were delivered for the construction of nationally significant highways in the western regions, surpassing the 2022 level by more than 1 million tons. The overall operational freight turnover also increased by 7.5%, reaching a milestone of 270 billion tariff ton-kilometers.
