The latest TransFER route made its debut at transport logistic in Munich, introducing the groundbreaking TransFER Vienna–Kyiv. In a collaborative effort between ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) and Ukrainian Railways (UZ), Ukraine is now seamlessly integrated into the intermodal network, TransNET. The inaugural test train embarked on a journey from Kyiv to the Rail Cargo Terminal BILK in Hungary at the end of September, marking a milestone in the transportation of non-craneable semi-trailers laden with construction materials via rail. This marks a departure from the traditional method of truck transportation, prevalent in the industry until now.
Facilitating this innovative approach is the r2L (roadrailLink) technology, a collaborative effort between wagon hire company VTG and partner VEGA International. This cutting-edge handling and transport technology economically facilitates the loading of any type of non-craneable semi-trailer. The fully galvanized r2L solution functions as a platform that can be vertically lifted into and out of a pocket truck using terminal cranes or reach stackers, allowing non-craneable trailers to be seamlessly integrated into combined transport.
The new Kyiv-Vienna connection operates with a stop in Budapest and represents the first regular, high-frequency intermodal link between Ukraine and the numerous hubs in Central Europe. Beyond intermodal transport, ÖBB Rail Cargo Group continues its contribution to global supply security by transporting 150,000 tonnes of Ukrainian grain into the EU, ensuring the uninterrupted flow of goods between Ukraine and the European Union.
