Deutsche Bahn (DB) has revealed an ambitious project aimed at enhancing connectivity between Germany and the Czech Republic. The proposal involves the construction of Germany’s longest railway tunnel, spanning 30 kilometers from Heidenau (GER) to Ústí nad Labem (CZ) through the Ore Mountains.

This planned infrastructure aims to provide a viable alternative to the often-disrupted Elbe Valley route, fostering a smoother connection between Dresden and Prague. Recognizing the frequent disruptions on the Elbe Valley route, including those caused by weather or DB-related issues, DB emphasized that the new line “will offer a flood-safe alternative.” In addition to the tunnel, the initiative includes expanding the Dresden-Heidenau section, requiring the construction of approximately 46 kilometers of new tracks, around 90 switches, modern control and safety technology, and new parking facilities for trains.

After two and a half years of deliberation, DB concluded that the full tunnel variant is the most environmentally friendly and efficient solution for traffic, technology, and the economy. The next steps involve initiating a Public Debate with citizens in January, determining the preferred variant by mid-2024, and subsequently consulting the German Federal Parliament (Bundestag). Anticipated to commence construction in 2032, the tunnel project is estimated to take around 12 years, according to various German media sources, including Süeddeusche Zeitung.
