The Rhenus Group has undertaken a significant initiative to upgrade two canal push boats operated by Deutsche Binnenreederei (DBR) with state-of-the-art Stage V engines, aligning them with future environmental standards. As part of Rhenus’ ongoing fleet development plan to meet climate protection goals, this modernization effort is part of a broader strategy to equip the entire fleet with the latest engine technology. While the development of new hydrogen-powered vessels remains a long-term project, Rhenus is prioritizing short-term sustainability by retrofitting older vessels, starting with the canal push boats RSPSB146 and RSPSB153, both dating back to the 1970s.

The conversion of the two vessels, spanning approximately ten months, involved replacing outdated engines with modern diesel generators from SCANIA and Caterpillar, certified for inland waterway use. These truck engines incorporate Stage 5 exhaust gas treatment, preventing environmentally harmful particles from entering the air. This retrofit results in a substantial 40% reduction in particulate matter pollution. The new 740 kW engines represent a threefold increase in performance, necessitating a complete overhaul of the engine room to accommodate the larger units. The vessels now feature the latest electronics, a modern control cabinet, and an encapsulated Silence Pack enclosure for quiet operation, allowing the onboard crew to rest undisturbed. The updated vessels, equipped with new power trains, thrust bearings, and shaft seals, will continue to navigate eastern German inland waterways.

In parallel, Rhenus remains committed to advancing sustainable inland waterway shipping. This year, the company introduced the first hydrogen-powered flagship vessels designed for low-emission operations, even in challenging conditions. Collaborating with Arkon Shipping, Rhenus has developed five new vessels for near-coastline cargo transport, reinforcing its dedication to sustainability across its shipping transport operations. The focus on reducing CO2 emissions and fostering sustainability in global supply chains remains a key goal for the global logistics specialist.
