Rhenus Group is launching a Green Steel Logistics Hub at its Dortmund site, scheduled to commence operations in autumn 2024. The hub aims to facilitate environmentally conscious transhipment and transportation of steel, particularly targeting companies involved in steel production, handling, and processing. Rhenus is implementing sustainability measures, including modernizing existing warehouses with features such as solar panels covering 4,000 square meters to generate electricity for crane equipment, the building, and charging infrastructure for upcoming electric trucks.

The Green Steel Logistics Hub focuses on the rolled and flat steel market, offering a more sustainable distribution of steel in the Dortmund region and the eastern Ruhr valley with reduced CO2 emissions. Leveraging the trimodal terminal at the Mathieshafen port facility in Dortmund, Rhenus ensures efficient transportation, connecting major seaports to Dortmund through waterways shuttle services. The strategic location enables the use of electric trucks for inland distribution, contributing to the company’s commitment to eco-friendly logistics. Additionally, Rhenus plans to introduce an inland waterway fleet to further reduce emissions, while electric trucks will deliver steel products within a 50-kilometer radius from Dortmund, charging at modern electric charging points at the Green Steel Logistics Hub.
