In the first nine months of 2024, the container throughput of the Port of Hamburg amounted to 5.8 million TEU, which is almost the same as last year. An increase of 0.2% was recorded in the loaded container segment (5.1 million TEU), but the handling of empty containers decreased by 4.6% to 722 thousand TEU. In the general cargo segment, an increase of 3.7% was recorded, reaching 904 thousand tons. At the same time, the volume of bulk cargo transshipment decreased by 9.3%, amounting to 24.9 million tons, which is due, in particular, to a reduction in coal transshipment after the closure of power plants.

The Port of Rotterdam, ZeroNorth and Vitol have completed their first digital bunker delivery, launching a four-week trial of the electronic Bunker Delivery Note (eBDN). As part of the project, Vitol will carry out three to four bunkerings using the ZeroNorth solution. The aim of the trial is to evaluate the benefits of the digital format, such as time savings, increased operational efficiency and improved data quality.

According to the results of January-September 2024, the port of Yuzhny demonstrated rapid growth in revenue, increasing it more than 11 times – to UAH 2.34 billion. Net loss for the same period in 2023 in the amount of UAH 314.64 million was replaced by a profit of UAH 921.56 million.

A delegation from Los Angeles, led by US Ambassador Natalie Reyes, visited the Port of Rijeka. During the visit, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the Port of Rijeka Authority and the largest US port, the Port of Los Angeles. The document was signed by Deputy CEO of the Port of Los Angeles David Libatique and CEO of the Port of Rijeka Denis Vukorepa.

The construction of the first container hub on the Caspian Sea coast has begun in the Mangistau region, which will increase the capacity of the Aktau port to 240 thousand TEU per year. Land management work is already underway, with more than 20 units of special equipment involved. The first stage is scheduled for completion by mid-2025.

(ONESEA), a new venture focused on technical ship management and marine talent development. Based in Singapore, the company combines the advanced technologies and expertise of both companies to achieve excellence in the shipping industry.

ASCO has presented a detailed plan for fleet decarbonization in line with the updated International Maritime Organization (IMO) Strategy for Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions. As part of the first stage, scheduled for 2024-2027, ASCO will decommission 65 obsolete vessels and commission 17 new, energy-efficient ships. These measures will reduce the company’s emissions by 25%, and the use of ships with greater cargo capacity and fuel efficiency will reduce them by another 9%.

The ma-co digital training center, created as part of the PortSkill 4.0 research project, was presented at the Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA) in Hamburg. The center is designed to prepare port employees for work in a digital and automated environment. It features cutting-edge training technologies and customized programs that help them master the new skills needed in a modern port.

Estonian state-owned enterprise Tallinna Sadam reported revenue of 90.8 million euros for January-September 2024, up 2.5% year-on-year. The company’s net profit increased by 14.1% to 14.9 million euros, while EBITDA reached 41 million euros (+5.4%).

Despite the decline in container traffic in the third quarter, the Port of Gothenburg expects record container throughput for 2024. Over the nine months, the volume reached 685,000 TEU, up 1% year-on-year. At the same time, the handling of full containers increased by 5%, while the handling of empty containers decreased, indicating a restoration of the balance between exports and imports.
