The Port of Antwerp-Bruges is testing an autonomous electric shuttle for container shipping.

The Port of Antwerp-Bruges, in collaboration with technology partners Akkodis, VDL and Medrepair (part of MedlogSA, a subsidiary of MSC), demonstrated an innovative autonomous electric shuttle for intra-terminal container transportation. The project is being implemented within the framework of the European PIONEERS initiative, funded by the Horizon 2020 program.

Baltic Hub enters the final stretch of expansion of Terminal T3.

The T3 terminal expansion project at the Baltic Hub port in Gdansk has reached an advanced stage: 89% of the construction work has been completed, which confirms that the schedule is strictly adhered to and that new stages are ready to be launched. The operating permit for the second section of the terminal has been received, which already allows limited operational processes to begin on part of the territory.

The Port of Antwerp-Bruges has launched Europe’s first fully electric tugboat, Volta 1.

The Port of Antwerp-Bruges has launched Volta 1, Europe’s first fully electric tug, developed in partnership with Damen Shipyards. The new double-ended RSD tug has a 2,782 MWh battery and can operate for up to 12 hours without recharging, delivering a bollard pull of 70 tonnes – the same as its diesel counterparts. Charging takes just two hours via a 1.5 MW charging station.

The Port of Amsterdam and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador will create a transatlantic green hydrogen corridor.

The Port of Amsterdam and the Government of the Canadian Province of Newfoundland and Labrador have signed a strategic cooperation agreement aimed at developing a transatlantic corridor for green hydrogen supplies from Eastern Canada to Europe. The document sets out the parties’ intentions to promote climate goals, energy security and sustainable economic growth through clean energy trade.

EWD Benli Recycling opens Germany’s first large-capacity ship recycling plant.

EWD Benli Recycling has received official approval for the construction of Germany’s first ship dismantling and recycling plant. The new facility will be located in Emden on the premises of the Emder Werft und Dock (EWD) shipyard, which is owned by the project’s parent company. The approval process lasted almost a year, and now the company is officially recognized as a specialized waste management operator.

DEME launches the largest infrastructure project in the port of Livorno.

On May 13, 2025, the official launch of the Piattaforma Europa project took place in the Italian port of Livorno, which will be implemented by the Belgian group DEME together with partners. The project includes large-scale dredging and coastal protection works, the construction of new breakwaters, berths with a total length of 3 km, two terminals and the expansion of the port area by 2 million square meters.

Jan de Nul will carry out dredging in the port of Aktau for the development of the Trans-Caspian route.

A large-scale project to deepen the seabed by 1.5-2 meters is starting in the waters of the Kazakh port of Aktau as part of expanding the potential of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR). The work is planned to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2025, the Ministry of Transport reported. The contractor will be the Belgian company Jan de Nul, which specializes in dredging.

Hannibal renews its fleet at the port of La Spezia: 20 new terminal tractors ordered.

Intermodal transport operator Hannibal, part of the Contship group, continues to modernize its equipment at the port of La Spezia by ordering 20 new Terberg YT Series terminal tractors. The delivery of the vehicles is scheduled for the end of 2025 – beginning of 2026 and will be the next step after the first 16 vehicles were delivered in March. The new tractors will be used for shuttle operations at the LSCT container terminal.
