Rotterdam sees growth in LNG bunkering as fleet switches to clean fuel.

In the first quarter of 2025, the Port of Rotterdam recorded a 6.9% increase in liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering volumes compared to the same period last year, reaching 230 thousand cubic meters. This indicates an active expansion of the global fleet of vessels powered by gas motor fuel.

During the whole of 2024, 941 thousand cubic meters of LNG were delivered to the port, which is 52% more than in 2023. The port administration emphasizes that the recovery in demand for LNG is associated with the normalization of prices after a period of sharp growth.

Despite the fact that the total volume of ship bunkering in Rotterdam in 2024 decreased by 0.9% to 9.8 million tons, the use of LNG continues to grow steadily. LNG Prime notes that this confirms a steady trend towards the transition of shipping to more environmentally friendly types of fuel.
