The HHLA container terminal in Hamburg will deploy a private 5G network to test innovations.

The Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA), owned by Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA), will receive funding from the German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) for the installation of a 5G network as part of the “DigiTest” initiative. This pilot project aims to create a digital test bed where new use cases for the technology will be tested to improve the efficiency of logistics processes.

The PROCON-5G project envisages the deployment of a private 5G network with high bandwidth and instant data transfer on the premises of the CTA. The new infrastructure will accelerate the digitalization of the terminal, increase the reliability of communications and support the smooth operation of automated equipment. In the future, the network will also be used to test mobile maintenance and other innovative solutions.

The project is funded with €2.3 million and will be implemented until mid-2026. Once the network is installed, various technological solutions will be tested, the results of which will benefit not only the CTA, but also other port logistics companies.
