Container throughput at the Port of Rotterdam has grown for the first time in three years.

In 2024, container throughput at the Port of Rotterdam grew for the first time in three years, increasing by 2.8%. The main drivers were consumer goods and food, for which demand increased significantly. According to Frank van der Laan, Senior Advisor for Business Intelligence at the Port Authority, this growth could continue, especially after the planned capacity expansions are completed. However, he notes that the port remains affected by geopolitical risks.

After several years of declining volumes, container shipping has regained its position, especially in the food, medical and semi-finished industrial goods segments. Van der Laan explains that recent years have been unusual: the COVID-19 pandemic initially led to a decline, then a sharp increase in demand, and by 2022 the situation changed due to geopolitical factors, including the war in Ukraine.

The war led to a decrease in container throughput in Rotterdam, as 8% of its volume was linked to Russia. Many containers from Asia, previously bound for St. Petersburg, passed through Rotterdam. Rising energy prices in Europe reduced purchasing power and consumption, but the situation stabilized in 2024. Imports of electronics, furniture and household appliances (+17%), as well as food (+7%) increased in particular. At the same time, exports of energy-intensive products from Europe, including cars and chemicals, remain weak due to high costs.
