Cargo handling in Latvian ports decreased by 7.2% over 11 months.

Cargo handling volumes at Latvia’s three largest ports decreased by 7.2% in January-November 2024 compared to the same period last year, amounting to 32.79 million tonnes. This is evidenced by data from the Latvian Ministry of Transport. In the overall transshipment structure, bulk cargo amounted to 15.63 million tonnes (-17.7%), general cargo – 12.59 million tonnes (+5.4%), and liquid cargo – 4.56 million tonnes (+5.3%).

The largest changes occurred in the coal segment, the volume of which fell by 70.5% to 1.02 million tonnes. Grain handling increased by 2.1%, reaching 6.33 million tonnes, and wood chips – by 34.9%, to 2.27 million tonnes. The container cargo handling figures also increased to 4.64 million tons (+0.8%) and the number of containers to 464.8 thousand TEU (+11.4%).

Among liquid cargo, the volume of oil products amounted to 3.99 million tons (+2%), and the transshipment of liquefied gas increased by 23% to 73 thousand tons. Significant growth was also observed in the timber (+31.7%) and metals (+46.8%) segments, which underlines the changes in the structure of cargo flows.
