Maersk has upgraded its first container ship to run on methanol.

The container ship Maersk Halifax has become the first large vessel in the industry to be converted to run on methanol. The conversion took 88 days at the Zhoushan Xinya shipyard in China and was completed at the end of October 2024.

The work, carried out by MAN Energy Solutions, included adapting the engine to run on methanol, adding new fuel tanks, a fuel supply system and a dedicated fuel preparation room. To accommodate the tanks, the ship’s hull was extended by 15 meters, increasing its length to 368 meters and increasing its cargo capacity from 15,000 to 15,690 TEU.

Maersk Halifax is part of Maersk’s 11-vessel Hong Kong-class fleet. Following the conversion, the vessel left the yard on November 4, 2024, becoming a symbol of the industry’s transition to green technologies.
