The largest inland container terminal in Europe has opened in the port of Duisburg.

The new Duisburg Gateway Terminal (DGT) has been officially opened in the Port of Duisburg, which will be the largest inland container terminal in Europe. The ceremony took place on the former coal island with the participation of the Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia Hendrik Wüst and the Mayor of Duisburg Søren Link. The first construction phase has been completed and the terminal is already operational.

The DGT is an innovative project that will become a model for the future of logistics. All processes on an area equivalent to 33 football pitches will be digitally controlled. A special role in the project is played by the enerPort II program, which aims to create a completely climate-neutral infrastructure based on renewable energies and hydrogen technology. The terminal will be equipped with solar panels, fuel cells, hydrogen engines and energy storage systems.

“When all sides – companies, planners, authorities, politicians and citizens’ associations – work together and look for solutions, then we are successful. We can see the result of such a successful joint project here today”, emphasize the Managing Directors of Duisburg Gateway Terminal GmbH, Christoph Kahlert и Sven Zölle.

The enerPort II project is supported by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection and includes the participation of companies such as Westenergie and Rolls-Royce Power Systems. In the future, the system will be able to supply energy not only to the terminal, but also to the neighboring areas of the city. In the first stage of construction, the cost of which amounted to about 120 million euros, the terminal has already been put into operation and occupies 150 thousand square meters.
