The first hydrogen barge Rhenus completes tests on the Rhine.

The first hydrogen-powered barge from Rhenus is undergoing a crucial testing phase at the shipyard. Three innovative vessels are being tested thoroughly to ensure they meet the highest standards of sustainability and technical innovation. These tests are aimed at final preparation for test sailings and subsequent approval for operation.

The development of hydrogen barges is an important step for Rhenus on the road to low-emission shipping. During the tests, special attention is paid to the adjustment of complex electronic systems and the verification of technical components. Key roles in the vessel are played by the fuel cells, which convert hydrogen into electrical energy, and the powerful 840 kWh battery, which supports the vessel even in emergency situations.

The barges are also equipped with 350 kW diesel engines to ensure long-distance voyages if required, and an electric bow thruster for precise maneuvers. These systems help reduce noise levels and increase energy efficiency.

Rhenus has already received special approval from the UNECE for the use of hydrogen as a fuel. This makes the vessel the first hydrogen barge of its kind to be approved for navigation on the Rhine and opens a new chapter in environmentally friendly river transport.
