The first Rail Baltica Information Centre has opened at the Kaunas railway station in Lithuania. The centre will provide up-to-date information on the project, which is set to radically change rail transportation in the Baltic region. With the launch of the high-speed line, Kaunas railway station will be able to serve around 11,000 passengers daily, which will exceed the figures for the capital, Vilnius.
According to Irmantas Butkauskas, Director of the Lithuanian branch of RB Rail, 15% progress is expected in the construction of the 870 km route this year. The construction of 29 km of main embankments and access roads in the Jonava region is already underway, and in the coming years, the work will expand towards Panevezys and Kaunas.
Kaunas is seen as a key hub for Rail Baltica and a future logistics centre in Lithuania. The growth of passenger traffic and the development of transport infrastructure will attract investment, stimulate economic growth and increase the city’s attractiveness for business and tourism.
