CSSC builds the world’s largest container ship and new terminal in Ningbo.

The Shanghai Institute of Ship Research and Design of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) has received in-principle approval for the construction of a new dual-fuel container ship. This vessel, which will be able to run on liquefied natural gas (LNG), will have a capacity of 27.5 thousand TEU, which is 3 thousand TEU more than the capacity of the world’s largest container ship today.

In addition, a new container terminal with an annual throughput of 2 million TEU is planned to be built in the Chinese port of Ningbo-Zhoushan. The terminal will be equipped with two berths capable of receiving ships with a capacity of up to 24 thousand TEU with the potential for expansion to accommodate 32-meter container ships.

The start of construction of the terminal is scheduled for October 2025, and its completion is expected by the end of 2027. Recall that the largest container ship in the world belongs to MSC, which last year received new ships with a capacity of 24,346 TEU.
