The design of the Iecava service point of the Rail Baltica mainline has been completed and has received final approval from the State Railway Technical Inspectorate. This facility will be a key base for logistics and construction of the mainline connecting Riga with the Lithuanian border.
Construction work in Iecava is planned to begin soon, making this the first point outside Riga where work on the project will begin. The 16-hectare site will be used to build approximately 14 km of 1,435 mm gauge tracks, which will be connected to the existing 1,520 mm gauge tracks.
Another service point is also planned in Skulte. In December 2021, EDzL signed a contract for the design of these facilities with the Italian company Sintagma Srl and the Latvian BRD projekts, worth 1.85 million euros. Construction of the main Rail Baltica route in Latvia will begin in 2024.
