A digital training centre for employees of the port industry has opened in Hamburg.

The ma-co digital training center, created as part of the PortSkill 4.0 research project, was presented at the Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA) in Hamburg. The center is designed to prepare port employees for work in a digital and automated environment. It features cutting-edge training technologies and customized programs that help them master the new skills needed in a modern port.

Over the past two years, the project has analyzed operational, administrative and technical roles in German seaports. The research has shown that automation not only creates changes in familiar processes, but also new tasks that require specific and even completely new skills. The training center at the CTA combines modern equipment, virtual technologies and a well-thought-out methodology to train specialists who are adapted to the future requirements of the industry.

Key elements of the center include a video wall with six screens for simulating operations, remote crane control consoles and a separate room with virtual reality for practical training. The centre is also linked to the ma-co branches in Hamburg and Bremen, allowing participants to train in a shared virtual environment, regardless of their physical location. This environment allows for safe practice of scenarios, including non-standard and emergency situations, and for training programmes to be tailored to individual needs.

The PortSkill 4.0 project is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMDV) as part of the IHATEC II initiative. The consortium, including HHLA, BLG, Eurogate, PatientZero and the trade unions ver.di and ZDS, was formed in 2020. The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2025, after which the centre will be available to the entire maritime industry. In addition to training, the project examines the socio-economic impact of digital transformation in ports, making the change process more people-oriented.
