A large-scale infrastructure project has been completed at the Port of Riga.

In December 2024, the Freeport of Riga transport infrastructure modernization project was completed, aimed at improving the commercial competitiveness of the port and strengthening Latvia’s military mobility. The key stage was the completion of dredging works for the expanded berth of SIA Baltic Container Terminal, implemented as part of a joint project with CINEA. The total investment amounted to EUR 12.51 million, half of which was provided by the European Agency for Climate, Infrastructure and Environment.

The infrastructure modernization in the Kundzinsala area includes the construction of a modern access control point, the reconstruction of the road and railway bridge over Sarkandaugava, and a new access road to the terminal. These changes will allow servicing large cargo and military vessels up to 340 meters long, speeding up the loading and unloading process, as well as reducing truck congestion and its negative impact on residents of the area.

According to Ansis Zeltiņš, the head of the Freeport of Riga, the project is an important step in transforming Kundzinsala into a modern logistics hub. In addition, the connection to the military base in Ādaži has been improved, which strengthens national security and meets NATO standards. The new infrastructure also opens up opportunities for attracting large investors, including renewable energy projects.

The project was launched in 2022, and its completion will allow two large vessels to be received simultaneously and will contribute to the efficiency of the terminal. Thus, the modernization becomes a key element in strengthening the port’s role in international logistics and military mobility.
