Chemical-energy cooperation

The Port of Antwerp-Bruges is gearing up for its upcoming “Chemistry & Energy Summit,” slated to take place in Burghausen on May 16, 2024. This summit aims to foster dialogue on the critical relationship between the chemical industry and the energy sector, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts to pave the way for a carbon-neutral future.

Central to discussions will be the pivotal role of hydrogen in Europe’s journey towards climate neutrality. With Germany projecting a substantial demand for hydrogen by 2030, ports like Antwerp-Bruges are proactively developing infrastructure to ensure sustainable and reliable energy supplies for industries across Europe.

In line with this commitment, significant projects are underway at the port sites, including the transformation of a former refinery into the Vopak Energy Park Antwerp, a hub for green energy. Additionally, plans for an open-access import terminal aim to transport sustainable ammonia to regional chemical industries and further inland by 2028.

Among the innovative endeavors is Air Liquide’s investment in a pilot plant at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, set to convert ammonia into hydrogen with minimal carbon emissions. This initiative underscores the port’s role as a hub for pioneering technologies in the energy revolution, with various companies within its ecosystem contributing to the advancement of hydrogen as a key technology. The summit will serve as a platform for industry experts to exchange insights and strategies, shaping the future of sustainability and innovation in the chemical and energy sectors.
