DB Cargo UK upgrades ETCS locomotives for future rail freight operations.

DB Cargo UK is launching the upgrade of its Class 66 locomotives to the ETCS train control system in partnership with Siemens Mobility. This is the first stage of a national programme aimed at digitalising rail services and improving safety. The project is part of the £1.4bn East Coast Digital Programme, which will replace traditional signalling systems with digital ones that feed information directly into the cab for drivers.

The upgrade will take place at Toton depot in the East Midlands and is due to be completed by March 2026. At the same time, DB Cargo UK is investing in infrastructure upgrades, including a new wash bay, cranes and accommodation for the Siemens team. John Harman, head of asset management at DB Cargo UK, says the project will enable freight growth, improve network reliability and enhance safety.

The collaboration between DB Cargo UK, Siemens Mobility and Network Rail paves the way for a more efficient and sustainable UK rail system. This project confirms DB Cargo UK’s leading role in modernising freight transport and creating digital solutions for the rail logistics of the future.
