Digital trade transformation by Maersk and IBM

Maersk and IBM, alongside industry partners, spearheaded a groundbreaking initiative to revolutionize border processes and international trade efficiency. Through the UK Government’s ‘Ecosystem of Trust’ pilot scheme, they explored the potential of digital data sharing to streamline customs procedures and enhance supply chain integrity.

The consortium, including Hutchison Ports Port of Felixstowe, Maritime Cargo Processing, Pure Electric, Quantexa, Westbridge Foods, and WM Morrison Supermarkets, conducted a pilot that provided crucial supply chain data for 700,000 consignments to the UK Government. Results showed a remarkable 17% decrease in decision-making time for goods entering Great Britain, along with significant reductions in delays, waste, and greenhouse gas emissions.

Moreover, the initiative demonstrated a promising future for digital trade corridors and trusted trade lanes, with potential cost reductions of up to 40% in private sector customs data collection. Moving forward, the UK Government plans to integrate these best practices into its Border Trade Demonstrator Initiative and the UK Single Trade Window program, while Maersk explores extending trusted trade lanes and digital trade corridors globally. This collaborative effort marks a pivotal step towards a more efficient and sustainable future in international trade and customs operations.
