Elron to purchase six high-speed electric trains for Rail Baltica.

Estonian national carrier Elron has announced plans to purchase six high-speed electric trains for operation on the new Rail Baltica mainline with a European gauge of 1,435 mm. The trains will use 25 kV AC and are designed for speeds of up to 200 km/h. Each train will be up to 100 meters long and will be able to carry about 200 passengers and will be compatible for operation in dual mode.

The new trains will be equipped with the latest generation ETCS traffic control systems (TSI B3R4) and will be prepared for the installation of the advanced FRMCS digital communication system. The rolling stock is planned to be put into operation in December 2030, serving routes within Estonia with a possible extension to Riga.

Elron will complete marketing consultations by 9 May 2025, and will launch a tender for the supply of trains in June. The contract with the winner is scheduled to be signed in December 2025, with deliveries expected in autumn 2029. This project will be part of the integration of the Baltic States into the single European railway system.
