Evergreen orders 11 container ships for $3.2 billion

Taiwanese shipping company Evergreen Marine Corporation has signed contracts for the construction of 11 container ships with a capacity of 24,000 TEU each. The total value of the deal will be up to $3.2 billion. The new ships will be equipped with dual-fuel engines running on liquefied natural gas (LNG).

The order is divided between two shipyards: South Korea’s Hanwha Ocean, which will build six ships for $1.77 billion, and China’s Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI), a subsidiary of CSSC, which will build five ships for about $1.4 billion. The average cost of one container ship will be $265-295 million. Delivery is scheduled for 2028, which will increase Evergreen’s fleet by 264 thousand TEU.

With this order, Evergreen’s order book now includes 59 ships with a total capacity of more than 820 thousand TEU, which is 46% of the company’s current fleet. Earlier in 2023, Evergreen ordered methanol-powered container ships from Samsung Heavy Industries, which demonstrates the company’s strategic focus on green solutions.
