In a strategic move aimed at growth and innovation, Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) has acquired a majority stake in Roland Spedition GmbH, a leading container operator for hinterland transport in Austria. Under the deal, HHLA will hold 51 percent of the shares, with the remaining 49 percent retained by co-shareholders Christian Gutjahr and Nikolaus Hirnschall, who will continue to steer the company forward.
Founded in 1982, Roland Spedition GmbH has emerged as a trusted partner for freight forwarders and shipping companies in maritime hinterland transport. With an annual volume exceeding 130,000 TEU, the company plays a significant role in promoting environmentally friendly rail transport and boasts a widespread network across Central and Southern Europe, connecting key ports to hinterland destinations. Despite its expansion, the company remains committed to its neutral and reliable service ethos, employing approximately 50 staff across two Austrian sites.
By integrating Roland’s service portfolio into its extensive European network of seaport terminals and intermodal connections, HHLA aims to offer tailored, eco-friendly transport solutions to its customers throughout Europe. Christian Gutjahr and Nikolaus Hirnschall, who have spearheaded Roland since 2005, will continue to lead the company as co-partners and managing directors, ensuring continuity and expertise in the transition.
