HHLA has installed three new highly automated container cranes in the Port of Hamburg.

Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) has completed the installation of three new highly automated container cranes at its Altenwerder terminal (CTA). The first of their kind in the Port of Hamburg, these remotely operated cranes will help to significantly increase the efficiency of container ship handling.

The cranes arrived at the terminal on December 14, 2024, on board the specialized vessel “ZHONG REN 121” and were delivered partly assembled by Liebherr from Ireland. With a height of up to 120 meters and a boom length of around 70 meters, the cranes are designed to handle ships with a capacity of up to 16,000 TEU. By the end of December, the cranes will be installed at berth 1 and will be in operation from 2025.

All 14 container cranes at CTA will be replaced by highly automated models in the coming years. Production of the next batch of three cranes has already begun and they are expected at the terminal in 2026. HHLA continues to invest in innovation and modernization of its terminals to improve the environmental and economic efficiency of its operations.
