From January to April 2025, the volume of rail transportation between Kazakhstan and China reached 11.4 million tons, which is 13% more than in the same period last year. 6.2 million tons (+5%) were transported through the Dostyk border crossing, 5.2 million tons (+24%) through Altynkol, reported JSC NC KTZ.
Over the past five years, freight turnover between the countries has increased by 48% to 32 million tons. Since 2020 alone, exports have grown by 25% to 13.7 million tons. Agricultural exports are developing especially actively: in 2024, grain supplies amounted to more than 3.3 million tons, of which 1.8 million were grain, and 1.5 million were processed products, including flour and compound feed, the volume of which has increased fivefold.
To support the growth of transportation volumes, KTZ is actively modernizing its infrastructure: in 2024, more than 1,400 km of tracks were repaired and construction of over 1,000 km of new tracks is ongoing. Particular attention is paid to the development of the TMTM and the creation of a third border crossing with China, which will relieve existing routes and strengthen the transit potential of Kazakhstan.
