Liège International Airport and terminal operator Liège Logistics Intermodal (LLI) have announced a strategic partnership aimed at creating a major multimodal hub in the Liège area. The project will be based on the modernization and expansion of the existing road and rail terminal owned by the SPI Economic Development Agency.
The terminal currently sends nine trains per week to Italy and receives three from China. By 2030, it is planned to invest €22 million in improving the rail infrastructure, installing crane equipment and reconstructing access roads, which will increase transport volumes.
The second phase of the project includes the construction of new transport approaches, warehouses and horizontal transhipment areas, which will allow up to 45 trains per week or up to 180,000 containers per year to be handled. As part of this partnership, Liège Airport will also acquire 10% of the shares in LLI.
