Lithuania has approved the construction plan for the Rail Baltica section from Kaunas to the Polish border.

The Lithuanian government has approved an infrastructure development plan for the Rail Baltica section from Jesia (Kaunas) to the border with Poland. As part of this project, procedures for the purchase of land for public needs will also begin. The new double-track European railway will be built along the Alternative 6A route, approved in 2022 after active public discussions. This route is the shortest and farthest from urban areas.

The railway will be laid through new territories, starting from Yesia station, bypassing Marijampole and Kalvarija, and also departing from Kazlu Ruda. If technically possible, sections of the existing European railway will be used. This section will be used for regional passenger transport and military mobility, already hosting freight trains between the Kaunas Intermodal Terminal and Western Europe.

Along the route from Kaunas to the Lithuanian-Polish border, it is planned to build about 115 new structures – tunnels, bridges, viaducts, animal crossings and culverts. Regional stations will be located in Marijampolė, Šeštokai and Kazlu Ruda, which will be connected to the main line by regional connections.
