Rhenus Port Logistics invests in the Basel terminal.

Rhenus Port Logistics is making a significant investment in Basel, unveiling plans for Terminal 4, a new trimodal transshipment hub set to revolutionize freight logistics in the region. Scheduled to start operations by late summer 2024, Terminal 4 underscores Rhenus’s commitment to bolstering sustainable infrastructure and promoting efficient, climate-friendly import/export traffic.

Situated in Basel, renowned as Switzerland’s logistics epicenter, Terminal 4 strategically links the country with major European ports via neighboring Germany and France. This transshipment platform, located near the border triangle, aims to future-proof Basel’s connectivity by integrating rail and road transport modalities.

Terminal 4’s construction represents a modern marvel, boasting five sections spread across 7,300 square meters. With over 7,000 cubic meters of concrete and steel weighing nearly 1,500 tons, the terminal embodies efficiency and durability. Equipped with five cranes boasting up to 40 tons of lifting capacity, along with state-of-the-art railroad track cars and trucks, Terminal 4 ensures seamless covered transshipment operations.

Moreover, Terminal 4 will house the largest photovoltaic system in Basel, generating approximately 2.4 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually. This sustainable energy source aligns with Rhenus’s commitment to carbon neutrality, enabling the handling of products like aluminum, steel, and excavated road material in an environmentally friendly manner.
