SBB Cargo is launching the first shuttle service under the Suisse Cargo Logistics strategy, connecting Dietikon (near Zurich) and Stabio (Ticino). The new route will start operating in 2026 and will be a pilot project to test the demand and efficiency of long-haul intermodal transport across the Alps.
At the same time, the company is closing eight loss-making terminals, including major hubs in Basel, Lugano and Gossau. This decision is aimed at stabilizing the combined transport sector, which has been generating losses of millions in recent years.
If the pilot project is successful, SBB Cargo plans to expand the service on the east-west axis, including infrastructure developments such as the Gateway Basel Nord terminal. By 2033, the company aims to reduce annual costs by CHF 60 million, which will entail the loss of around 65 jobs in operations by the end of 2025.
