Швеция продлевает железнодорожное паромное сообщение с Германией до 2031 года.

Правительство Швеции поручило Шведскому управлению транспорта поддерживать железнодорожно-паромное сообщение между Швецией и Германией до 2031 года.

The instruction follows the continued use of the Trelleborg – Rostock train ferry route operated by Stena Line.

Trelleborg – Rostock: Sweden’s only remaining train ferry

Stena Line operates two rail ferries on this route – Skåne and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Both vessels are designed to transport railway vehicles directly without the need for reloading, supporting rail freight flows between Sweden and Germany across the Baltic Sea. This service is the last remaining train ferry connection from Sweden.

Assignment for the Swedish Transport Administration

The Swedish Government has tasked the Swedish Transport Administration with taking the necessary measures to secure the continuation of the train ferry service. The assignment is part of Sweden’s preparations to support military mobility requirements connected to its NATO membership.

The Swedish Armed Forces view this connection as essential for the rapid movement of military units and equipment. The assignment is also aligned with Sweden’s total defence planning and host nation support commitments.

The Swedish Transport Administration is required to carry out the task in consultation with the Swedish Armed Forces and to obtain input from the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB). The assignment involves continued dialogue with other relevant stakeholders.

Progress reports on the measures are scheduled to be submitted by the end of 2025 and again by the end of 2026.

Further parliamentary steps planned

The Government plans to present proposals to Parliament later in 2025 to enable the Swedish Transport Administration to enter into the agreements necessary to carry out the task and ensure the continuity of the train ferry service until 2031.
