Since 1 January 2025, Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) has been using 100% renewable energy for its transport operations. This is the final step in the company’s long-term strategy to reduce its environmental footprint.
Previously, 90% of SBB’s energy consumption was covered by hydroelectric power and the remaining 10% by nuclear power, which is now sold on the market. At the same time, the company purchases an equivalent amount of electricity from certified renewable sources, which has made it possible to completely eliminate the use of nuclear energy.
According to SBB, Swiss rail transport accounts for only 0.3% of all CO₂ emissions in the country’s transport sector. The complete switch to green energy strengthens the railways’ environmental role and demonstrates their commitment to combating climate change.
