The first charging station for battery-powered trains will be built in Lithuania.

The first charging station for battery-powered trains in the Baltics will be built in the Lithuanian city of Varena. The design and installation of the EUR 3.2 million facility will be carried out by UAB Fima under a contract with LTG Infra. The construction is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026.

According to Vytis Žalimas, CEO of LTG Infra, the station will allow passengers to travel to Varena on new battery-powered trains. They will be able to serve routes remote from the overhead contact network, using the accumulated energy and charging at special stations. The charging time will be up to 45 minutes, and the process will take place during boarding and preparation of the train for departure in order to minimize delays in the schedule.

LTG Group has already signed a contract for the supply of nine electric and six battery-powered trains, created using Swiss technology. Their testing on Lithuanian railways will begin this year.
