Container traffic at the Port of Hamburg remained stable in the first half of 2024, handling 3.8 million TEU, almost the same as last year. Despite economic challenges and tensions in the Red Sea region, container handling and overall port throughput demonstrated resilience.
Amid the transition to clean energy, the port has seen a significant decrease in coal volumes, leading to an overall decrease in bulk cargo transshipment by 3.9% compared to last year, to 55.9 million tonnes. However, the number of container ship calls and the share of rail transport in the structure of port traffic increased.
Trade with key partners showed positive dynamics. In particular, traffic with Malaysia increased by 14.7%, and with the USA by 9.0%, which consolidated their position among Hamburg’s main trading partners. China remained in first place, despite a decrease in volumes of 2.2%.
