The ports of Hanko and Rostock have applied for the modernisation of the Baltic Sea route.

On 21 January 2025, Port of Hanko Ltd and ROSTOCK PORT GmbH jointly applied for funding from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) to modernise maritime infrastructure within the TEN-T network. The aim of the project is to strengthen the long-standing cooperation between the ports and improve the Baltic Sea route on the Rostock-Hanko line.

The project aims to modernise a key transport corridor: upgrading the infrastructure to accommodate large and environmentally friendly ro-ro vessels, improving the efficiency of port operations and increasing intermodal capacity. The Rostock-Hanko route plays a key role in Finnish foreign trade, connecting Finland with continental Europe.

The ports of Hanko and Rostock are ideally suited for sustainable and multimodal logistics solutions that take into account the future needs of EU trade and industry. The first works will start already in March 2025, and the project is scheduled to be completed in June 2027. A positive assessment of the project is expected with the support of the Finnish and German governments.
