The proposal involves the construction of Germany\u2019s longest railway tunnel, spanning 30 kilometers from Heidenau (GER) to \u00dast\u00ed nad Labem (CZ) through the Ore Mountains.<\/p>\n<p>This planned infrastructure aims to provide a viable alternative to the often-disrupted Elbe Valley route, fostering a smoother connection between Dresden and Prague. Recognizing the frequent disruptions on the Elbe Valley route, including those caused by weather or DB-related issues, DB emphasized that the new line \u201cwill offer a flood-safe alternative.\u201d In addition to the tunnel, the initiative includes expanding the Dresden-Heidenau section, requiring the construction of approximately 46 kilometers of new tracks, around 90 switches, modern control and safety technology, and new parking facilities for trains.<\/p>\n<p>After two and a half years of deliberation, DB concluded that the full tunnel variant is the most environmentally friendly and efficient solution for traffic, technology, and the economy. The next steps involve initiating a Public Debate with citizens in January, determining the preferred variant by mid-2024, and subsequently consulting the German Federal Parliament (Bundestag).
