According to Raitis Ne\u0161pors, Chairman of the Board of PV, Estonia is purchasing new \u0160koda electric trains as part of its network electrification program, which will potentially free up some of its diesel fleet. Leasing is currently being discussed, as Estonia is not yet ready to completely phase out its existing diesel trains. It is anticipated that the first two trains could be delivered to Latvia as early as next year.<\/p>\n<p>Against the backdrop of rolling stock renewal, Latvia continues to electrify its own routes: 32 new \u0160koda electric trains are already arriving in the country, but 23 diesel trains still operate on non-electrified lines. According to PV\u2019s calculations, the country will need 28 diesel or hybrid trains over the next 10-15 years. To partially replace the fleet, it plans to purchase BEMU battery-powered trains: a contract is expected to be signed by the end of 2025, with deliveries expected by 2029. As part of the deal, PV expects to receive nine trains with an option for six more.<\/p>\n<p>The company is also in talks with Lithuanian and Estonian rail operators, exploring additional funding mechanisms to accelerate the renewal of its diesel fleet, as the previous EU support program has already ended.
