The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade P\u00e9ter Szijj\u00e1rt\u00f3, HIPA Chairman Istv\u00e1n J\u00f3\u00f3, Szeged Mayor L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Botka, and METRANS CEO Peter Kiss. \u200b\u200bThe new terminal is scheduled to open in 2027, strengthening Hungary\u2019s position in European supply chains and boosting the region\u2019s competitiveness.<\/p>\n<p>The intermodal terminal in Szeged will serve as the country\u2019s southern gateway and complement the METRANS terminal in Budapest, which has been in operation since 2017, creating a new logistics hub. The approximately 10-hectare facility will be equipped with four 330-meter-long loading lanes and two modern, remote-controlled electric gantry cranes. The terminal will be able to handle up to six pairs of trains per day and up to 300,000 TEUs per year, securing Hungary a key role in the transport corridor between Central Europe and the Balkans, as well as attractive conditions for the manufacturing, automotive, electronics, FMCG, and e-commerce sectors.<\/p>\n<p>The METRANS project is focused not only on economic growth but also on sustainable development. Shifting freight traffic from roads to rail will reduce congestion on the road network, reduce traffic on the M5-M43-55 corridor, and improve the environmental situation in the region. The company estimates that the terminal will prevent tens of thousands of tons of CO\u2082 emissions annually.
